David Sheekwuan, one of the leaders of fashion designers in Hong Kong in the 1970s. Majoring in painting, the gifted graduated from San Francisco Art Institute, before designing textile in Paris. Those five long years was the best time in his life, when textiles were transformed into art! He then worked three years in the United States. In 1972, he returned to Hong Kong and established his own fashion design brand, David & David. His designs were loved by customers all around the world, including Japan, Taiwan and France!
For the love of movies, David Sheekwuan invested in the movie led by Brigitte Lin and designed a number of memorable stage costumes. He was also active in food industry, inventing longjing tea icecream. His celebrated coffee shop was welcomed by big names such as Brigitte Lin, Cherie Chung, William Chang and Xiaoyu Deng.
Painting could not satisfy the expression of the artist. He looked into the lens and captured what he sees. In the 1990s, he studied under Parsons and Santa Fe as a photographer. Content and insight are more important than skills to him. His works are characterised in highly-observational colour, line and ratio.
Years and years he had been making noise in fashion, culinary, photography and film. David Sheekwuan now set back in Zhongshan. Once an artist, forever an artist. Again, he picked up the paintbrushto express his monochrome, geometric while content-based world.
David Sheekwuan once said, ‘art cannot exist if it could be explained!’As these shades of ink, provocative, expressiveand meaningful.
